Show Update #17 - Saturday Night at the Trinity Cathedral
After being made a number (#9) and being stripped of my rights of being a person, i heard the news:
The scheduled bands, Zombie Vandals and Comatose, had called earlier and said their van broke down so they wouldn't be able to make it. Suprisingly, Anne, a band that had played at the last show, showed up with equipment and said they wanted to play. Also all of the Gangus Kon and Tonite We're Avena members were there, so they just used each others equipment to play.

They were playing to a small crowd and experiencing technical difficulties with the lights and the mics, but Anne played with the hard sound they had last time. The singer continued to sing even when the mic was shorting and the people farther out couldn't hear a single word. If only people got off their lazy asses and listened up, they would have experienced the illustrious rhythms of Anne more thoroughly. The band definitely puts out a great sound and is well-deservedly playing at the Stone Pony later this month.

Next up was Gangus Kon, a classic at Trinity, who supposedly hadn't played together for 2 months. The lights diminished and the crowd cheered while the band kicked off their set. Such songs as Darth Vader and The Cakeman were instrumented. Amps blasting, PA system screaming, and meanwhile the crowd scrambling into moshes all over. There were even huge guys in the middle like at shows at the TLA or the Troc. The band announced they had played horribly and I care to disagree. I also believe I am not alone in this. Gangus Kon, a Trinity classic.

Tonite We're Avena took up Gangus Kon's instruments and started a scuffle of their own. I always like their seemingly grunge influenced instrumentals mixed with lyrics and vocals with more of an indie nature. All i can say is their set was too short, it seemed like 4 or 5 songs and they walked off.
The lead singer sat himself behind the drum set and 2 kids from the crowd took the mics as one of the guitarists also stayed. Hard drums, heavy guitar, and 2 hardcore kids screaming back and forth. I didn't know whether to laugh or just stand and watch as the two went thrashing about, knocking over mic stands, and the one guy went strangling himself with a mic cord. After Mike Segonic (spelling?), being the asshole he seems to be, took over the drums from the unwilling singer of Tonite We're Avena, I took a seat somewhere. A good filler none the less.

Ah well, after that was over, it was Ku Dá Ta's turn. Featuring guitarist and bassist from Gangus Kon, drummer from Local Demise, 2 guys with mohawks on vocals and lead guitar, and some crazy roadies in full dress. It was evident they were punk before they played, but I hadn't thought 70s/80s style influenced punk rock still existed in true form. I'm so tired of this pop crap, its made me have tunnel vision. They played and it was just good stuff. College kids went crazy as great hard punk rock music erupted from the speakers. A suprise for me at a New Jersey local show, the band seemed to experiment with various styles and mix yelling lyrics with just singing them. Not much I could do other than stand, watch, and nod my head.

If that wasn't enough for you, next up was Local Demise. Hard rhythms, heavy sound, punk rock vocals. They featured a banner with the line "Fuck Everything" painted across the bottom, all types of stage lights and black lights, and a tank, a FUCKING CARBOARD TANK built by their fans! In the middle of their first song, this fucking carboard tank, turret and all, with various slogans written all over, comes out into the middle of the pit and just sits there. The band messed up a little, but when they continued their set, a bunch of moshers tore the shit to peices. In minutes the pit had been turned into a massacre with savages beating each other senseless with slabs of cardboard and duct tape-made Police night sticks. It was fucking sick, no one was safe, on the outside or within.
The band supported by its fans, continued to echo hard guitar riffs and vocals that reverberated through every fiber of every object animate and inanimate in that church. Fuck everything. The band enveloped in smoke (from a smoke machine), set off an unending pit that contained 20+ people. Cardboard was fashioned into shields, wings, gloves, anything thinkable.
To make things even greater, the band's smoke machine set off the fire alarms and within 5 minutes Local Demise had not only attracted the police (which has happened before), but also fucking fire fighters. The yellow suited fire fighters entered a scene of cardboard strewn about, 20+ sweaty moshers, and Local Demise to be blamed for it.

To say the least, a sick show. Maybe it was the fact that most of the people there that i knew were people who don't know me or that none of my friends had come so there was only me to give a damn how I looked there nodding my head. It was probably just the atmosphere of mostly college kids and an actual local show, more than just a hang out for a bunch of scenesters. Whatever, fucking sick, especially being, for the most part, unplanned.
