Show Update #15 - Friday Night at the Trinity Cathedral
All week I'd been promoting this show, by word of mouth, handing out flyers, hanging up flyers in the hallways. I had also been looking forward to this show since it'd been a while since i'd actually had the good fortune of seeing a whole Trinity show.
I got there and hackey sacked with Nate and a couple other people, one of them being the guitarist for the Riotones, who gave me a handful of stickers for his band.
Then the band, Anne, came on. They had a really great sound, although the lead singer had a ugly voice at times. His voice would sometimes sound really good, and other times it would just be kind of ugly. They screamed a little and had an all over grunge sound. Really good band, i wish they were selling something, i would've bought it.
Next up was the Riotones. I had some prejudices since its kind of goofy being the lead singer and always having a band with "Riot" in the name, for instance "Edens Riot" or "The Riotones", but whatever. They came out with a kick ass sound. Lots of movement in the crowd and the band itself, added to the overall performance. An awesome set, i enjoyed them. The guy with the spikes, dave, alex, and yapes, started up a couple circles. All that happened was the crowd moved forward or backed off and three people were left circling around. Kind of lame. Not many mass pits. I joined in a couple times, and fell on my ass once and went sliding across the floor into someone's feet. Lotsa fun! Hard guitar and bass combined with good vocals = a good set.
So i joined another hackey sack circle, hey it beats being bored. Some big guy came on in front of the stage with a soft voice and an acoustic guitar, no good. After about 5 intros, one being the big guy with the acoustic, the band, Break Away, started playing. They screamed a little bit and seemed to have some quick rhythms. That was only 2 songs though, not their whole set, because they started playing some whiny pop punk. Songs about chicks, gah. The lead singer kept asking people to move up, no one listened. Meh, it got old, and i found other things to do. I think i confused them with Breaking Even when i thought they would be good.
Some people are idiots. For instance some punk who looked like he was like a 12 year old druggy, came in with a condom hanging off one of his mohawk spikes. Then he or someone else blew it up and it went floating above the crowd. It finally popped over someone, sucka.
The next band was all the way from canada and they couldn't get their equipment across the border. Heh. I guess the border guards thought guitars were weapons of mass destruction or something. Well anyway, luckily Break Away offered their equipment for Full Count to play on. They were so great. They played hard rhythms with great vocals. Pits emerged. 1vs1's took place. It was so much fun. They're EP pricing was a bit steep, but i figured they came 10 hours to play for us, so i bought it, 5 bucks, so what. I talked to the lead singer, he was really cool, really nice. Told me to go to the website and download the rest of the tracks they've recorded. Go check it out click here. For some reason they just don't sound the same on cd/mp3 compared to their sound live.
I think i got my picture taken in a pit also, i just don't remember if it was during the Riotones, Break Away, or Full Count. I know i was probably flying through the air.
Stepped outside as SGR set up, quick smoke, heh...not really. Got some water, by this time i was kind of gross. First thing i noticed when i came back was that SGR had an actual horn section and even a saxaphone. Last time i saw them they had lost Pete, and a couple other members so that all they had was a mellophone. With that set up it just wasn't the SGR sound that took place at the first show I ever went to.
Right away a skank circle formed with a huge amount of people. With listening SGR i came to recognize the similarities between reggae and ska. Nice comfortable skanking around the circle. Yapes brought back a broom from somewhere, and him and alex went around the circle either riding it or sweeping up all the trash on the ground. Quite funny. SGR was selling a whole bunch of stuff, i probably should've bought a shirt, but nah...i think they had a new cd though.
Took about a half hour for them to set up, but after they were done the lights darkened and the Cryptkeeper Five began their set. Alex commented that they all look like the Fonz, bah, Jimmy, the saxaphone player, and the wasted guitarist don't....*shakes fist*. Left that crowd and found myself up front on the side amidst some groupies and shawn and sutt. Every song dave lam came up to me and yelled "be be be bebe" but he was wrong. I sang pretty loud, and these groupies next to me kept dancing and bumping into me. One groupie headbutt a bruise on my shoulder and left a larger bruise on my shoulder, but she rubbed her head and stopped dancing for a bit, so I was happy. The speakers were quite loud, but my ears numbed out and I could hear better. Ha cryptkeeper played "All Ya Mother Fuckers Gonna Rock This Joint", been so long since i heard that one. They played it in the middle which was quite different. The wasted rhythm guitarist who usually smokes, drinks, sings, and plays guitar simultaneously, jumped off the stage and started making out with some chick in the crowd while still playing guitar. He also stood on top of a very large amp and danced around. Cryptkeeper was great as always.
