Show Update #1- Saturday Night at Ewing Elks Lodge
First show i ever went to in my life, well show in the Ewing scene. This review is written a long time after i saw the show so try to follow as i try to remember. It was a good show, i remember, but also i had nothing to compare it with. Well lets see...
Band #1- the Honor Students
Well i never really did get to see this bands full set. I walked in late and was only able to hear the final song of this bands part of the show from the hall way. Ever since then, though, everything that sounds bad has been compared to them. I can only imagine how bad they were, but i'll never know, since they probably broke up by now from critism. One thing, the song i heard from the hall sounded like crap.
Band #2- r.o.o.t.
I'm not sure if this band ever continued with what they were doing but i really did like their sound. Even though they had no real singer since he was lost when he quit. The bass line was still pretty good though, John Wolfe cooked up some nice slap-pops. Also i did find the set entertaining. First off, John acted gay like usual (i don't mean that offensively, he was acting like he was a homosexual), and he was coming onto Travis, which i guess is also usual. Then their were girls in the crowd going crazy which reminded me of the live recording of "The Sweater Song" by Weezer that i have, where the girls cheer "TAKE OFF YOUR PANTS!" while Rivers Cuomo is trying to talk. It definitely lightens up the whole event.
Band #3- Never The Less
I remember thinking to myself, "Wow! Where the fuck did all these preps wearing abercrombie and fitch golf shirts come from?". Now their were a lot of black shirts there, KWs, and thick rimmed gogs, so to suddenly see a crowd of scrawny white guys and annorexic chicks all standing compact, as close as possible to each other, was a little weird. Well anyway this was the first time i heard Never the Less play, and probably the last time i would like them. I didn't like how they sounded so much like a bad MXPX, but whatever, and when they covered MXPX it made it worse. I was still a learning bassist though, so i still respected the technique of each player, even though i later realized Mike Pechter is probably the only member with a lot of talent, and at shows he doesn't even use it all. No talent in a basic rock beat...
Band #4- Edens Riot
I seriously don't remember much about this band, but i think i thought they were the best band yet to play. They were more punk rock and their lyrics were good i think. I think i probably tried my first attempts at skanking in a pit during their set. Ah well sorry guys, i don't remember much more.
Band #5- the CryptKeeper Five
In general conversation about this show, Cryptkeeper had been highly spoken of, so i had my hopes up. When they started off with "All you mother fuckers gonna rock this joint!", I was like, "SWEET!". I truly enjoyed everything they had to offer. I still had no idea how good their lyrics were but their sound was amazing to me. It was the style of classic rock and roll yet something new to it. Also it was extremely funny to me how they all wore gas station uniforms with their names on it. Oh and the energy was great. I skanked, I headbanged, I jumped around, by the end of the show i was winded. After their set i only had 5 dollars left, i was only able to get their compilation CD, "Songs to Murder That Special Someone To" from Ghouls Night Out Records.
Band #6- SGR
I hadn't thought a local ska band was possible. They seem so hard to form and keep coordinated, its like a mini orchestra with only 8 people. Anyway before their performance i met up with Mr. Silipino, who actually recognized me. He had been my student teacher for concert band in 8th grade and now taught at Parkway School. He was the trombone for SGR and had to go get ready. They were pretty good. I liked a lot of their songs and continued skanking. Sadly i was out of money and therefore was able to purchase and merchandise from them.
Lets review:
It was my first show. I had a really good time. I went home and slept well.
